Frequently Asked Questions
The Maldives enjoys warm weather year-round, but the best time to visit is between November and April during the dry season. This period offers the most sunshine, least rainfall, and best visibility for diving and snorkeling. The wet season from May to October sees more rain but also fewer tourists and lower prices.
Tourists of all nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives, provided they have a valid passport, confirmed accommodation, and return tickets. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival.
Transfer options depend on your resort location. Resorts near Malé (within 20km) typically use speedboats (20-45 minutes). More distant resorts require seaplane transfers (30-60 minutes), which only operate during daylight hours. Some faraway resorts may use domestic flights combined with speedboat transfers. Your resort will arrange your transfer upon booking.
The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US dollars are widely accepted at resorts. Credit cards (especially Visa and MasterCard) are accepted at most resorts. It's recommended to carry small denomination US dollars (1, 5, 10) for tipping and local purchases. ATMs are available in Malé and at some larger resorts.
Resorts are very relaxed - swimwear is appropriate at the beach and pool areas. When visiting local islands (outside resorts), modest dress is required - shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women. Bikinis and swimwear are only allowed at designated "bikini beaches" on local islands.
